Crossover TV Episode: Striker

Endeavour Morse investigates a death threat against the Oxford Wanderers’ star striker, Jack Swift. Swift’s manager has been discussing loaning him out to Fulchester United. The Wanderers’ chairman is Robert Fenner, who runs Fenner Fashions, and says he is in “the rag trade.” The town of Fulchester is originally from the TV series Crown Court, but later became the setting for many of the strips in the British adult comic magazine Viz, including “Billy the Fish,” in which the title character, the half-man, half-fish Billy Thompson, is the goalkeeper for Fulchester United. Although Billy the Fish’s exploits are too outlandish and overtly satirical to fit into the CU, we can assume that Fulchester United has a counterpart there, and that Crown Court is in. Robert Fenner must be a relative of Harold Fenner, who ran the clothing workshop Fenner’s Fashions in the TV series The Rag Trade (1961-1963; 1977-1978). In the 1970s revival, Anna Karen reprised her role of Olive Rudge from On the Buses.

Crossover TV Episode: Oracle

In this episode of Endeavour, an undertaker business named Duxbury’s is mentioned. Duxbury’s is likely an Oxford branch of the undertakers’ firm Shadrack & Duxbury from Keith Waterhouse’s Billy Liar.

Crossover TV Episode: Scherzo

In this episode of Endeavour, Joe North is an employee of Speedee Cabs, one of whose customers is Mr. Benn of 52 Festive Avenue. A driver from the Noglea School of Motoring appears, and Paradise Court nudist camp is seen. Window cleaner Lee Timothy also appears.  Joe North is the title character of the movie Adventures of a Taxi Driver. Speedee Cabs is from the movie Carry on Cabby. Paradise Court is likely part of a chain that also contains the Paradise nudist camp from Carry on Camping. Mr. Benn is from David McKee’s children’s books. The Noglea School of Motoring is from the movie Confessions of a Driving Instructor. “Lee Timothy” must really be the protagonist of the Confessions films, Timothy “Timmy” Lea. Lee Timothy’s birthdate is October 12, 1950, the same as the actor who played Timmy Lea, Robin Askwith. The first film was Confessions of a Window Cleaner.

Crossover Episode: Ride

In this episode of Endeavour, Detective Constable Endeavour Morse investigates the murder of artist Simon Hallward, whose landlady was named Mrs. Cravatte. Simon Hallward must be related to painter Basil Hallward from Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray. Mrs. Cravatte was the name of Anthony Hancock’s landlady in the TV series Hancock and the movie The Rebel. Apparently, she relocated from East Cheam to Oxford at some point in the years since the events of The Rebel.

Crossover TV Episode: Colours

In this episode of Endeavour, Chief Inspector Thursday and his wife attended the Stuart-Hargreaves Dance Studio in Bicester. Murder victim Jean Ward is really the Right Honorable Moira Creighton-Ward. The South Oxfordshire Regiment was at Mboto Gorge. One of the Regiment’s members is Private “Geordie” Collier. A pair of British fascists named Spode and Webley are mentioned. Yvonne and Barry Stuart-Hargreaves were the dance instructors at the holiday camp Maplins in the TV show Hi-de-Hi!, which takes place in 1959-1960. Apparently, they left the camp and opened a dance studio in Bicester sometime between 1960 and 1968. The Right Honorable Moira Creighton-Ward is apparently a relative of Lady Penelope Creighton-Ward from the television series Thunderbirds, which has already been established as a possible future for the CU. The Battle of Mboto Gorge is from the Blackadder Goes Forth episode “Goodbyeee.” Private Collier may be Newcastle native Terry Collier from the television series The Likely Lads. Terry joined the army in the last episode. Roderick Spode is from P. G. Wodehouse’s Jeeves novels. Everard Webley is from Aldous Huxley’s Point Counter Point.

Crossover TV Episode: Quartet

In this episode of Endeavour, Endeavour Morse investigates the murder of a contestant at an international event for the game show It’s a Knockout! The French team is from St.-Josse-des-Bois, a small town in the Pas-de-Calais. The victim was a postal clerk in Werfen, Bavaria. Chief Superintendent Bright says, “Good god! It’s a machete-wielding West Indian with a distinctive facial scar we’re trying to find. In Oxford! It’s not the Scarlet Pimpernel.” Morse passes an ad for Grimsby Pilchards. It’s a Knockout! was a real show. St.-Josse-des-Bois is the setting of the four-episode series Monsignor Renard, co-written by Endeavour creator Russell Lewis and starring John Thaw, who played the older Endeavour Morse on Inspector Morse. Werfen is a real town in Salzburg, Austria, but the movie Where Eagles Dare placed it in Bavaria, Germany. We can assume there are two towns in different countries named Werfen. The Scarlet Pimpernel is from Baroness Orczy’s novels. Grimsby Pilchards are from “The Bowmans,” an episode of the television series Hancock. Morse passed ads for the Pilchards in two previous episodes.

Crossover TV Episode: Muse

In this episode of Endeavour set in April 1968, Endeavour Morse, who has been promoted to Detective Sergeant, refuses to believe in the existence of an international thief called the Shadow, saying “It’s all a bit Simon Templar.” Among the items the Shadow is reputed to have stolen is the Lugash Diamond. The artist’s model whose murder Morse is investigating once posed for painter Gerard Pickman. Simon Templar is Leslie Charteris’ “laughing Robin Hood of crime,” the Saint. The Lugash Diamond is the titular gem from the movie The Pink Panther and its sequels. Gerard Pickman may be a relative of painter Richard Upton Pickman from H. P. Lovecraft’s “Pickman’s Model.”

Crossover TV Episode: Raga

This episode of Endeavour is set in June 1970. Chief Superintendent Bright mentions his service in Pankot and Chandrapore. Oxford’s Conservative candidate in the general election is Archibald-Lake. Ludo Talenti says cooking show host Oberon Prince is no Robert Danvers. The island of Vrakonisi is mentioned. Pankot is from Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Bright’s service there was first mentioned in the episode “Prey.” Chandrapore is from E. M. Forster’s A Passage to India. Hugh Archibald-Lake is the Conservative candidate in The Wednesday Play episode “Vote, Vote, Vote for Nigel Barton,” a sequel to the earlier “Stand Up, Nigel Barton.” Robert Danvers is from Terence Frisby’s play There’s a Girl in My Soup. Vrakonisi is from Colonel Sun, the first-post Ian Fleming James Bond novel, written by Kingsley Amis as Robert Markham.

Crossover TV Episode: Prelude

In this episode of Endeavour, Endeavour Morse investigates a case involving the Oxford Concert Orchestra and its leader, composer and conductor Sir Alexander Lermontov. Morse finds a bill from the Englischer Hof hotel in Meiringen, Switzerland. Carshall New Town and Burridge’s Department Store are mentioned.  Sir Alexander Lermontov is likely meant to be a relative of the equally controlling ballet owner Boris Lermontov from the film The Red Shoes. The Englischer Hof is from Doyle and Watson’s Sherlock Holmes tale “The Final Problem.” Carshall New Town is the setting of Angus Wilson’s Late Call. Burridge’s Department Store is from the movie Trouble in Store.

This crossover is one of hundreds covered in my book Crossovers Expanded: A Secret Chronology of the World Volume 3, to be published by Meteor House! Crossover TV Episode: Lazaretto

In this episode of Endeavour set in Early September 1967, we learn that Constable Morse’s former fiancée Susan’s husband Henry is now head of the law faculty at New Carthage. Dr. Dean Powell formerly worked at Long Hampton and Finisham. New Carthage University is from Edward Albee’s play Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? Long Hampton Hospital is from the movie Carry on Again Doctor, while Finisham Maternity Hospital is from Carry on Matron.

Crossover TV Episode: Game

In this episode of Endeavour set in July 1967, novelist Kent Finn tells Constable Morse he went to Lowlands. The computer JASON’s program is written in Forbin 66. WPC Shirley Trewlove identifies a chess move as the Kronsteen variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined. Lowlands University is from the TV series A Very Peculiar Practice. The Forbin 66 programming language must be named after Dr. Charles Forbin, the creator of the titular supercomputer from the movie Colossus: The Forbin Project. In Ian Fleming’s James Bond novel From Russia, with Love, Kronsteen is a SMERSH agent and chess champion who “had introduced a brilliant twist into the Meran Variation of the Queen’s Gambit Declined.”

This episode is among the hundreds of crossovers covered in my book Crossovers Expanded: A Secret Chronology of the World Volume 3, to be published by Meteor House! All three volumes are AUTHORIZED companions to Win Scott Eckert's Crossovers: A Secret Chronology of the World Volumes 1 and 2!

In this episode of Endeavour set in mid September 1969, King's Abbot and Pigstanton are mentioned. King's Abbot is from Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot novel The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, while Pigstanton is from Evelyn Waugh's novel A Handful of Dust.

Crossover TV Episode: Apollo

In this episode of Endeavour set in late July of 1969, Chief Inspector Thursday says a murdered astrophysicist bought his faulty car from the Winsome Welshmen, Dudley and Dunstan. Dudley and Dunstan Dorchester, the Winsome Welshmen, are from the movie School for Scoundrels. The Bellini, a fictional car from that film, was previously mentioned in the Endeavour episode “Rocket.”

This crossover is just one of the hundreds included in my book Crossovers Expanded: A Secret Chronology of the World Volume 3! As with the first two volumes, this one is an AUTHORIZED companion to Crossovers: A Secret Chronology of the World Volumes 1 and 2 by Win Scott Eckert and will be published by Meteor House!

Crossover of the Week

June 1968

PASSENGER

Chief Inspector Thursday’s daughter Joan tells him she and her mother Win are going to buy a new lamp and have lunch at Burridges. During his investigation, Detective Sergeant Morse visits the Crossroads Motel in Kings Oak, where a cleaner called Mrs. T is mentioned. Several train stations are referenced, including Chadwick, Hamingwell Halt, Pudham, Whimperley, and Norborough. A Hammond & Sons Hauliers truck appears.

Episode of Endeavour broadcast February 18, 2018. Burridges Department Store is from the movie Trouble in Store and has been mentioned on Endeavour previously. The Crossroads Motel and Kings Oak are from the TV series Crossroads. Amy Turtle was the motel’s cleaner. Chadwick Station is from August Derleth’s Solar Pons story “The Adventure of the Lost Locomotive.” Hamingwell Halt and Pudham Stations are from the movie The Great St. Trinian’s Train Robbery. Whimperley Station is from Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot novella “Dead Man’s Mirror.” Norborough Station is from The Avengers episode “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Station.” Hammond & Sons Hauliers is a reference to the 1972-1976 TV series The Brothers. In the show, the Hammond family’s business was called Hammond Transport Services, but it’s not unlikely that they could have changed the name in the intervening years.

I chose to highlight an Endeavour episode because the series finale, "Exeunt," airs today in the U.K. In nine seasons, this show racked up a truly impressive number of shout-outs to other works. Major props to show creator Russell Lewis and his team for their role in expanding the rich tapestry that is the Crossover Universe!!!

This crossover writeup is one of hundreds included in my book Crossovers Expanded: A Secret Chronology of the World Volume 3, which will be published by Meteor House! Like its predecessors, the new volume is an AUTHORIZED companion to Win Scott Eckert's Crossovers: A Secret Chronology of the World Volumes 1 and 2!
