Crossover Cover: Cold Case

In Jim Butcher's story in this anthology, Molly Carpenter, former apprentice to Harry Dresden and the new Winter Lady, is sent by Queen Mab to collect tribute from the Miksani tribe of Unalaska, meeting Carlos Ramirez, a Warden of the White Council, along the way. The Miksani ask Molly and Carlos to rescue their children from cultists who seek to awaken an Old One called the Sleeper, who is entombed beneath the Pacific Ocean. According to Carlos, Lovecraft published stories and rhymes about the Sleeper, which gave it enough power to influence the world. Queen Mab is from William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The Sleeper is Cthulhu.

This crossover is one of hundreds covered in my book Crossovers Expanded: A Secret Chronology of the World Volume 3, which will be published by Meteor House! All three volumes are AUTHORIZED companions to Win Scott Eckert's Crossovers: A Secret Chronology of the World Volumes 1 and 2!

Crossover Cover: Peace Talks

Harry Dresden battles the Cornerhounds, creatures from the Outside, whom he also refers to as the Hounds of Tindalos. The Hounds of Tindalos are from the eponymous Cthulhu Mythos story by Frank Belknap Long, although Harry mistakenly attributes it to H. P. Lovecraft.

Crossover Cover: Bacon

This anthology contains the story "Bacon" by Charlaine Harris. A witch says the only sorcerer who’s gone public is in Chicago, and she hears that he’s struggling. This is a reference to Harry Dresden from the Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher. “Bacon” is set in the continuity of Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries series, which depicts vampires and other supernatural beings living openly alongside humans, and therefore takes place in an alternate reality to the CU. It is worth noting another of Harris’ series characters, Lily Bard, turns up in two of the Southern Vampire Mysteries novels, Definitely Dead and Dead Reckoning. Harris’ Midnight, Texas series features Bobo Winthrop from the Lily Bard series, Manfred Bernardo from the Harper Connelly books, and Sheriff Arthur Smith from the Aurora Teagarden series.

Crossover Cover: Summer Knight

Queen Mab inherits the debt Harry Dresden previously owed to the Winter Fae. Harry twice views Queen Titania with his Wizard’s Sight. Queen Mab and Queen Titania are from William Shakespeare’s plays Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream, respectively, and become recurring characters in the Dresden Files series with this novel.

Crossover Cover: Cold Days

Queen Mab of the Fae tests Harry Dresden by making a number of creative attempts to murder him, which he must survive. A ticking crocodile is mentioned as one of them. This must be the same one seen in J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan.

Crossover Covers: The Halflife Chronicles

Chris Cséjthe finds his life turned upside down when he discovers vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures exist, and he himself is now halfway through the transition between human and vampire. Dracula appears prominently in the first novel, One Foot in the Grave, as do tanis leaves, legends of which inspired the tana leaves in Universal Studios’ Mummy movies. A vampire named Barnabas who carries a wolf’s head cane appears; this is Barnabas Collins of Dark Shadows fame. A New Orleans vampire enclave with literary pretensions is mentioned, a reference to Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles. In the fourth book, Dead Easy, Chris encounters the Great Old Ones and Captain Nemo. Nemo tells Chris Professor Aronnax was fictional and Verne made The Mysterious Island up out of whole cloth. Nemo died in the 19th century, and was later resurrected as a rakshasa, a spirit being from Hindu mythology. Several individuals experienced in dealing with the supernatural are mentioned: a wizard in Chicago (Harry Dresden from Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files novel series); a necromancer in St. Louis (Anita Blake from novels by Laurell K. Hamilton); a waitress in Bon Temps (Sookie Stackhouse from Charlaine Harris’ Southern Vampire Mysteries); a weather warden (Joanne Baldwin, the protagonist of a series by Rachel Caine); and a guardian in London (Aisling Grey from novels by Katie MacAlister). Simmons’ take on Captain Nemo is very different from his established history in the CU. Combined with the fact both Sookie Stackhouse and Anita Blake’s exploits take place in worlds where the public is aware vampires and other supernatural entities are real, this places The Halflife Chronicles in an alternate universe.

The second novel in John G. Hartness’ series The Black Knight Chronicles, which features Jimmy Black and Greg Knightwood, who are not only partners in a private investigation firm, but also secretly vampires. At a strip club owned by Lilith, the biblical mother of demons, Jimmy spots “a skinny dude sitting in the corner with a leather duster and a glowing staff.” The “skinny dude” is Harry Dresden, the protagonist of Jim Butcher’s “urban fantasy” book series The Dresden Files.
