Sir Joseph Porter, K.C.M.G., grandson of the well-known First Lord of the Admiralty, is mentioned, as is the county of Loamshire. The Tape and Sealing-Wax Office is from the works of William Makepeace Thackeray. Sir Joseph Porter is the grandson of the character of the same name in Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore. The fictional English county of Loamshire is from George Eliot’s Adam Bede, Felix Holt, and Middlemarch. The fictional Loamshire Regiment appears in several works, including H. C. “Sapper” McNeile’s Bulldog Drummond novels, Evelyn Waugh’s Put Out More Flags and Men at Arms, and the movie The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp.

The Duchess of Towers is from du Maurier’s Peter Ibbetson.

Sir Alwyn Talbot is the ex-Principal of the Board of Tape and Sealing Wax. Barsetshire, the setting of many of Thirkell’s novels, is from the works of Anthony Trollope. Morgan ap Kerrig, Crumlinwallinwer, and Mewlinwillinwodd are mentioned in Charles Dickens’ Bleak House. The Tape and Sealing-Wax Office appears in four books by William Makepeace Thackeray: Vanity Fair, The Newcomes, The Bedford Row Conspiracy, and The History of Samuel Titmarsh and the Great Hoggarty Diamond.
