Crossover Cover: Valdemar's Daughter/The Mad Trist

These two short novels, both included in the same book, feature Edgar Allan Poe's sleuth C. Auguste Dupin, and also have strong connections to two other Poe stories, "Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar" and "The Fall of the House of Usher," respectively.

  1. There aren't as much pastiches of Dupin than there are of Sherlock Holmes. This of course because that Holmes is better known and frankly a more interesting character. Pastiches of Dupin I think allow a bit more creatively.

Dupin appeared in the first League of Extraordinary Gentlemen storyline and several pastiches noted by Win in the first Crossovers. I forget what they were though.

  2. There's an anthology called BEYOND THE RUE MORGUE that reprints "Murders in the Rue Morgue" along with several pastiches. Apparently Joe Lansdale's story is a crossover with Grimm's Fairy Tales, Frankenstein, and the Cthulhu Mythos:

So I'll definitely have to read that one.

  3. That sounds like something Joe Lansdale would write. From the book review, "The Purloined Face" would probably have to be a AU.

I don't know how you (or for that matter Win) can read everything you have to these volumes.

  4. I'm currently reading Lansdale's DEAD IN THE WEST, since the references to a number of Cthulhu Mythos tomes bring the Reverend Jebidiah Mercer into the CU. And "The Purloined Face" is a sequel to a story by Stephen Volk that I already wrote up for the AU section, so you're right about that.

I read several books at once, and somehow manage to keep them straight in my head. :)

  5. I read DEAD IN THE WEST years ago and was delighted at the Cthulhu mythos references. I'm pretty sure Mud Creek from the book is the same town as where the rest home from Bubba Ho-Tep is. I think he's used Mud Creek in other stories too.
