In 1896, Sherlock Holmes goes up against the mesmerist Dr. Gustav Caligari, who has turned an innocent man into a murderous somnambulist. At the end of this case, Watson reports that Caligari, having fled the hangman, eventually settled in Germany, where he created another somnambulistic killer named Cesare before being captured and placed in an insane asylum.
