Crossover Cover: MatchUp

This anthology of collaborations between female and male thriller writers teaming up their respective characters includes four stories involving characters who are in the CU. 

In Karin Slaughter and Michael Koryta's "Short Story," police detective Jeffrey Tolliver is partnered with Lincoln Perry, and they go after a drug dealer. Jeffrey Tolliver is from Slaughter’s Grant County series, which is connected to her Will Trent novels, which are in turn in the CU through a crossover with Lee Child’s Jack Reacher series. Therefore, this crossover brings in Koryta’s series about ex-cops turned private eyes Lincoln Perry and Joe Pritchard.

In Lisa Jackson and John Sandford's "Deserves to Be Dead," cop Regan Pescoli meets Virgil Flowers of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. Regan Pescoli is the protagonist of a series of novels by Jackson. Sandford’s Virgil Flowers series is in the CU through connections to his character Lucas Davenport, who is himself in the CU through Stephen King and Peter Straub’s Black House. Flowers reports to Davenport, and the two frequently appear in each other’s series.

In Diana Gabaldon and Steve Berry's "Past Prologue," ex-government agent turned bookseller Cotton Malone meets eighteenth century Scottish soldier Jamie Fraser through time travel. This crossover brings together Jamie Fraser from Gabaldon’s Outlander series and Berry’s series character Cotton Malone, both of whom have independent links to the CU. 

Lastly, in Kathy Reichs and Lee Child's "Faking a Murderer," Child’s character Jack Reacher helps to clear the name of Reichs’ forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan when she is accused of murder. Reacher is in the CU. Reichs’ Temperance Brennan novels are the inspiration for the television series Bones, which is also in. The Dr. Temperance “Bones” Brennan of the TV show is a generation younger than her literary counterpart, and has a completely different family tree, supporting cast, and background, so this must be an AU.

Crossover Cover: The Venetian Betrayal

Cotton Malone battles Irina Zovastina, supreme minister of the Central Asian Federation. Zovastina was previously suspected of being behind the theft of several endangered animals, a crime that was investigated by Painter Crowe at Sigma. James Rollins’ Sigma Force novel Black Order had a reference to Malone. This crossover further cements Cotton Malone and Sigma’s coexistence within the CU.

Crossover Cover: The Charlemagne Pursuit

Edwin Davis, a deputy national security advisor to the president, asks Stephanie Nelle, Cotton Malone’s former boss, for help, telling her Scot Harvath already turned down the request. Secret Service agent Scot Harvath appears in a series of novels by Brad Thor. Malone was previously mentioned in the Harvath novel The First Commandment. The death of Malone’s father, which occurred in 1971, is said to have been thirty-eight years ago. However, a year of 2009 would place the events of this novel after its year of publication, 2008. Additionally, the dates given fit 2007 rather than 2009. Therefore, I am regarding the references to thirty-eight years having passed as an error, and placing it in 2007, thirty-six years after the death of Malone’s father.

Crossover Cover: The First Commandment

CIA paramilitary operative Rick Morrell tells his subordinate Mike Raymond he is going to call in a favor from an ex-Department of Justice operative turned book dealer named Malone to verify whether or not former Navy SEAL and current Secret Service agent Scot Harvath is in Zurich.

Malone is Cotton Malone, who appears in thriller novels by Steve Berry. Since Malone is in the CU, this reference brings in Scot Harvath.

Crossover Cover: The Templar Salvation

FBI agent Sean Reilly tells his girlfriend, archaeologist Tess Chaykin, about his friend Cotton Malone, a former government agent who has retired, moved to Copenhagen, and opened an antique bookshop. Cotton Malone, who appears in a series of novels by Steve Berry, is already in the CU. Therefore, this crossover brings in Reilly and Chaykin.

Crossover Cover: Black Order

Gray Pierce, lead agent of Sigma Force, a division of DARPA, visits a bookstore in Copenhagen that is owned by an ex-lawyer from Georgia. Sigma’s director, Painter Crowe, begins a romance with Dr. Lisa Cummings. The ex-lawyer is Cotton Malone, who appears in novels by Steve Berry. Malone was brought into the CU by M.J. Rose's audiobook In Session. Rollins and Berry later co-authored a story entitled "The Devil's Bones" for the crossover anthology FaceOff that was a team-up between Painter Crowe and Cotton Malone. Dr. Cummings first appeared in Rollins’ non-series novel Deep Fathom, which depicts the Earth suffering massive natural disasters due to solar flares. Obviously, Rollins must have exaggerated the apocalyptic nature of the true events, just as the authors of the Spider pulp novels did. Rollins and Grant Blackwood are the coauthors of a spin-off series featuring ex-army ranger Captain Tucker Wayne and his military working dog Kane.

Crossover Audiobook: In Session

This audiobook is composed of three stories in which M.J. Rose's sex therapist character Dr. Morgan Snow meets and psychoanalyzes three other thriller series characters, Steve Berry's Cotton Malone, Lee Child's Jack Reacher, and Barry Eisler's John Rain. Reacher is in the CU through a reference in Stephen King's novel Under the Dome, and therefore this crossover brings in Snow, Malone, and Rain.
