This Buffy novel by Arthur Byron Cover has a reference to The Book of Eibon, a Cthulhu Mythos tome created by Clark Ashton Smith. The Mythos is arguably one of the most referenced works of fiction in terms of crossovers. I'm afraid I haven't read this book, which Win included in Volume 2, so I don't really have much more to say about it.

Well, Lovecraft encouraged other writers to use material from his works to create a sense of a common background. This was to create sense of verisimilitude to his stories as if they were drawn on a real mythology instead of one he made up. This work so well that people think the Necronomicon is a real book and certain occultists insist that the Old Gods were real (which probably would have horrified the materialist Lovecraft.)
ReplyDeleteThe manga/anime Soul Eater had an appearance of the Book of Eibon and Eibon himself. It would have to be an AU since in it the personification of Death is a public figure among other weirdness. Also Arsene Lupin and Sherlock Holmes appear.
