This novel features Auguste Lupa, the son of Sherlock Holmes and Irene Adler. Lupa is clearly meant to be Nero Wolfe, whom John D. Clark and William S. Baring-Gould previously speculated was Holmes and Irene's son. Lescroart also reveals that Mycroft Holmes was Sir Miles Messervy's predecessor as M, the head of the British Secret Service, a theory also used by Alan Moore in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
