Gwalchmai, the half-Aztec son of the Roman
centurion Ventidius Varro and the godson of Merlin, meets Corenice, an
Atlantean who prolonged her life by transferring her soul into a body made of
orichalcum. Corenice's account of Atlantis' fall mentions Valusia and Cimmeria. The
second novel in H. Warner Munn's Merlin's Godson series, which consists of King
of the World's Edge, The Ship from Atlantis, and Merlin's Ring.
The references to Valusia (from Robert E. Howard’s Kull stories) and Cimmeria
(from Howard’s Kull tales) bring this series into the CU. Ventidius is also mentioned in Dennis E. Power's story "The Judex Codex."

Just out of curiosity, how can the character be the son of both a Roman centurion and an Aztec?
ReplyDeleteAt least one review of King of the World's Edge says that they're proto-Aztecs, so probably Munn used the term Aztec for simplicity's sake.
ReplyDeleteI was more confused by how a Roman centurion could meet an (proto-)Aztec from across the Atlantic, but maybe King of the World's Edge explains that.
ReplyDeleteMerlin and Ventidius traveled to Alata (later known as North America) from England, where Ventidius had been posted from Rome.
ReplyDeleteI guess that explains it.
